BELLY CASTING

In the comfort of your own home (additional mileage charge may apply) or in our workspace.

How is it done?
Pregnant belly casts are usually created by covering your pregnant form (belly, breasts, hands, shoulders) with strips of wet plaster soaked cloth, built up into layers to strengthen the finished piece.

How long does it take?
An hour to an hour and a half, including time to prep the room and clear up afterwards. The actual time you will be in the cast depends on what we are casting. For a bump on its own, it might take as little as 15-20 minutes of sitting. For other body parts such as bump & breasts it may take between 45 minutes and an hour.

Will it hurt the baby?
Absolutely not. The plaster bandage used to cover you is very similar to that used in hospitals to cast a broken limb. The baby is free to move around during the process and there is no pressure on the womb. In fact, as the bandage dries, it will naturally 'lift away' from the body rather than press inwards.

Will it hurt me?
No. Before applying the plaster bandage, I get you to cover all exposed areas with a generous layer of Vaseline - the thicker the better! Therefore when we remove the cast it hasn't stuck to the tiny hairs on your body. If you are hairy then we can protect the areas by using cllingfilm over that area.

What if I have an allergic reaction?
It is advisable to do a patch test and see if there is a reaction to the product. However, this product is simialr to that used in the hospital when casting a broken limb. Obviously if you have a known allergy to any type of plaster or bandage/gauze cloth then it would be advisable not to have the belly cast done. We do not cast over any areas of inflamed skin or open wounds as it is likely to be uncomfortable.

What does it feel like?
The process is often compared to a gentle massage or mud wrap. It can be quite relaxing.

Can I bring my partner/husband/friend/mum?
Yes.
Casts undertaken in the fnal month of pregnancy we would request that someone accompanies you either a family member or friend. Not only will it relax you more and make it more fun and special to have someone there to tend to your needs but on rare occasions as with any other situation pregnant ladies have been known to feel faint and at those times it's reassuring to have someone with you. If you wish to have the casting photographed please let us know and we will facilitate this as much as possible.

Do you have your own space or can you come out to me?
I usually recommend everyone comes to me if they can. Our space is perfectly set up for casting and we don't have to worry about making a mess of your floor. If you live further afield then it may sometimes be possible for me to come to you by special arrangement, although I would have to charge extra for my time and petrol so this can prove quite costly. You can reduce this cost to yourself by having a casting party and getting other pregnant friends to contribute please ask for further details.

Do you do parties?
Of course, this is a lovely, fun activity.
All the materials needed for the group (usually up to 6 ladies) and I show you how it is done and then we all work together to produce your fabulous belly casts.
As it's a party we will supply non-alcoholic drinks and some other little luxuries to make this one of the most entertaining, memorable and moving experiences in your whole pregnancy. This is usually for belly only poses due to time constrictions, if you would like breast and hands included then extra charges would apply. Pleas enquire for details.

I am also happy to faciliatate at a friend or family members 'baby shower'. Friends can all contribute as a pre-baby gift. Casting is becming a part of the traditional' right of passage which makes it an unforgettable bonding experience for you, your friends/family and your baby. You can even involve your older children in the process, which can make it extra special for them too. They can help to apply the cast or be a part of it. For childrens hands to be included in the cast please add £10.00 to the Baby Shower price.

Can I decorate and hang it myself?
Of course. If you are artistic or you know someone who can decorate it for you

Can I decide to have it decorated at a later date?
Of course.
The cast can be strengthened, hung, painted, or decoupaged at any point in the future so long as you have taken care of it. If it has been slightly damaged, it can usually be repaired without too much trouble. Having a baby can prove quite expensive so when you are ready come back to me with your cast and have it prepared for it to be made into a beautiful piece of artwork for yourself or your child.

How soon will my belly cast be available for collection?
This all depends on the time of year and what pose/decoration you choose. If you opt for a straightforward cast and choose to hang and decorate it yourself then you can take it with you on the day and you will receive a handout explaining how to prepare the cast for decoraton.
If you wish merely to have it hung/sealed, it can be ready within a week. If you wish for smoothing this can take several weeks depending on what you want.
Casts can be collected when ready and I will let you know by telpehone and email.

Please email or call mif you would like further information.
